May 11th marks the launch of HMS Beagle, the ship that took Charles Darwin on his scientific voyage.  The Smithsonian recently digitized our first edition copy of the Origin of Species which has a couple interesting features. Like many of the first editions, species is misspelled as “speceies” on p. 20, line 11.  Our copy also has Czechoslovakian and Russian Darwin commemorative postage stamps affixed to the inside of the front cover.
